Retirement, college savings, and jobs

OK, last night I was just plain tired after fighting the windy thunderstorm on the way home and spending all afternoon and evening in Nashville.  Yesterday’s Financial Peace University lessons were “From Fruition to Tuition: Retirement and College Savings” and “Working Your Strengths: Careers and Job.”  These were both kind of hard for me to sit through: I am 34 and have no money set aside for retirement, a 13 year old son who wants to go to college forever (to be a veternarian or a lawyer!), and I am currently in college myself studying to be a pharmacist.

The lack of retirement savings is really beginning to bother me…and the examples Dave Ramsey uses for a 30 year old couple who start saving $500 a month (my husband’s truck payment!) has them retiring with $6 million dollars…and here I sit four years older with a big fat ZERO in my retirement account.  OUCH!

As for the career choice…well I have spend several years trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up…and I finally settled on getting my RPh because my mom showed me her pay stub.  Yet Dave Ramsey says you shouldn’t choose your profession just for the money.  My problem is I could do so many different things with my talents and abilities, but no specific one sticks out or fires up my imagination and passion.  As for having a fun job…I already have that by delivering pizzas…but it’s not exactly a high-paying profession LOL  I am having problems seeing myself retiring as a pizza delivery expert LOL

Now I know Amber is going to demand: Where’s the write-up on Zig Ziglar??  So, for her and the rest of y’all: Zig Ziglar deserves a blog post all to himself!  I’ll start working on that next, but I might not get to it til tomorrow morning.  If so…well that gives ya something to look forward to :)
